Lemurian Blue

Madagascan Granite Slab

Lemurian Blue Granite features rich shades of blue, green, black and turquoise. Quarried in Madagascar, Lemurian Blue is a Granite that is rich in labradorite. Labradorite is a mineral that displays lustrous colours which are formed by internal fractures that reflect light.

Labradorite, which was named after the Labrador Peninsula in Canada where the first deposits were found. Deposits of Labradorite can be found all over the world, with Madagascar being important for producing large blocks in which slabs can be cut. Labradorite/Lemurian Blue is a Calcium-sodium-aluminium rich Feldspar, part of the Plagioclase feldspars grouping. The main characteristics of the material is the amazing play of iridescent colours known as its Labradoressence or Schillerisation.  This labradoressence is caused when light is refracted from the thin mineral facets within the stone. These minerals/crystal facets have formed in a symmetrical fashion called twinning. So as the light enters the stone it is refracted from these twinned surfaces and produces that beautiful play of colour. Each twinned surface will reflect a different colour of light due to the various chemical /mineral makeup of the feldspar itself, iridescent blue, green, red, orange and yellow colours all evident.
