When homeowners first consider using marble in their homes, there may be some initial hesitation due to concerns over maintenance requirements, installation costs and durability factors. However, Oliver Webb, Director at Cullifords, is here to dispel these myths and explain why opting for marble could be the best choice for a home
‘Maintenance Requirements’
“Marble is naturally more porous than other materials that we stock, so we would always recommend an appropriate sealant at installation stage. Depending on the amount of use, this may need to be repeated. For daily cleaning, use a mild dish soap applied on a damp cloth, then buff dry using a microfiber cloth. Any spills should be removed as soon as possible by simply blotting with kitchen towel and cleaning as above. Our belief is that all precious things need some tender loving care, and that regular maintenance is a small price to pay for something that is so rich in natural history and beauty. So, if you’re looking for something that is eye-catching, with natural imperfections, then marble is 100% for you.”
‘Durability Concerns’
“Marble is an extremely durable natural stone, making it perfect for almost any room. Within the marble category there is a spectrum of harder and softer stones. We would always advise on a marble’s suitability for a specific application during the selection process, opting for harder types in high use areas such as worktops and softer varieties for walls. The durability of marble is far superior to wood, which we know makes up the majority of the kitchen worktop market. So, remember, if you choose the right stone for the right place, with the appropriate care and maintenance, marble will last for decades, even centuries.”
‘High Installation Costs’
“Many marbles cost the same, if not less than some of the larger surface brands on the market. The look and quality of a block, where it comes from and its availability will all affect the final cost of choosing marble. The fabrication price should generally be similar and in some cases a little less than ceramics or quartz, as marble is generally softer, and so much easier to work with. Like anything, there are more expensive marble products, deterring some budget-conscious homeowners. However, marble is often seen as an investment, due to its long-lasting nature and timeless appeal. Marble can be a great option, even increasing a property’s value, with many home-buyers perceiving marble as a luxurious high-end, and sought after material.”
‘Stains & Scratches’
“Another common concern is the potential for stains. Due to the propensity to etching, extra care should always be made to clean acid-based spills as quickly as possible. We would advise using coasters and mats to help prevent direct contact with the stones surface.
“Choosing marble with busy veining and breakouts of colour can help to disguise any small discolourations that may occur over time. As a softer stone, marble could scratch and we would always recommend a chopping board, never cutting directly onto the surface, being mindful of what is placed directly onto the stone. Selecting a honed or textured finish rather than polished can help to make marks less visible, especially when in direct sunlight.
“At Cullifords we feel that a patina built up over time through wear and tear is something to be cherished, like a favourite armchair. Remember, the great thing about soft natural quartzite and marble is that in most cases they can be resurfaced/polished in situ to remove any stains or scratches and will appear brand new again.”
“We would recommend marble to any homeowner looking for something that is timeless and elegant and exudes a ‘wow’ factor. Marble can enhance the look and feel of a home with its intricate veining, and with regular care, there is no reason why your marble surface cannot last for many years to come.”
